MapShot: GPS Camera
Privacy Policy
Overview
MapShot is a camera app that stamps photos with where and when they were taken. This policy explains what the app accesses, what stays on your device and what is sent to third parties.
What the app accesses
- Camera: to show the preview and take photos.
- Location (only while the app is open): to add coordinates, a place name and a map to the stamp.
- Compass (motion sensors, only while the camera is open): to record which direction the camera faced. No permission is needed and the app doesn't send the readings anywhere; the direction is only added to your photos.
- Photos and media: to save photos to your gallery and, if you choose, to pick an existing photo to stamp.
What stays on your device
- Your photos. They are created and saved on your phone and are never uploaded by the app.
- Your settings, such as photo quality, stored in the app's local storage.
- Temporary files used while creating a photo, which are deleted automatically.
What is shared with third parties
The app has no account, no servers of its own and no analytics. It uses these third-party services when you are online:
- Place names: your coordinates are sent to your phone's built-in geocoding service (on most Android phones this is provided by Google) to look up the address.
- Map preview: the map is provided by Google Maps, which receives the map area being shown.
- Advertising: the app shows ads from Google AdMob. To show and measure ads, AdMob collects your device's advertising ID, IP address (which reveals your approximate location), device and app information, and how you interact with ads. The app never gives AdMob your GPS location or your photos.
- Google's use of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy, including how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
Ads and your consent
Ads appear at natural breaks: at most one full-screen ad a day when you open the app, an occasional full-screen ad after saving, a banner at the top of the photo preview and at the bottom of Settings and help screens, and an optional video if you edit place names more than once a day. Ads never appear over your photos, and taking or saving a photo never waits for an ad.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, the app asks for your consent before showing personalised ads, and you can change your choice at any time in Settings → Ad privacy choices.
Everywhere, you can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalised ads, in your phone's settings (Settings → Privacy → Ads, or Google → Ads).
Location in your photos
The stamp is permanently part of each saved photo. Anyone you share a photo with can see the place, coordinates, date and time shown on it.
The same details (date, time, GPS coordinates, altitude, camera direction and address) are also embedded in the photo file as EXIF metadata, along with camera details such as the phone model. Some apps and websites read or remove this data when you share a photo.
Edit the place name before saving, or turn off location access, if you don't want to share your location.
Your choices
- You can deny or revoke camera, location and media permissions at any time in your phone's settings.
- Photos are only shared when you pick an app in the share sheet (for example with Share after capture, which is off by default). That app's own privacy policy then applies.
- Without location permission, the camera still works and photos are stamped without a location.
- Deleting the app removes its settings and temporary files. Saved photos remain in your gallery until you delete them.
Children
MapShot is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If the app's handling of data changes, this policy will be updated and the date above will change.
