Headless marketplace: Next.js storefront and Expo app on Magento

Magento 2 as the back end through its GraphQL API, with a Next.js website and a React Native app built with Expo on the same API.

The problem

The marketplace needed a fast website and a mobile app, both selling the same catalog from many vendors, without running two back ends or keeping two sets of business rules in step.

What I did

  • Used Magento 2 as the single commerce back end for the catalog, vendors, cart, checkout and orders, exposed through its GraphQL API.
  • Added custom GraphQL queries and mutations for the marketplace features Magento does not cover out of the box.
  • Built the web storefront in Next.js.
  • Built the iOS and Android app with React Native and Expo, on the same API.

The result

One back end serves both the website and the app, so products, prices, stock and orders match everywhere, and a new feature can reach web and mobile together.
