Faster, steadier Magento through code refactoring

Profiling a slow Magento 2 store and fixing the code behind it: heavy queries, caching and tangled checkout logic.

The problem

Pages were slow even with full-page cache switched on, and the checkout and order code had grown so tangled that changes kept causing production problems.

What I did

  • Found where the time actually went on the slowest pages before changing anything.
  • Rewrote the heaviest database queries.
  • Tuned full-page caching so more pages came from cache, and improved how Redis handled sessions.
  • Refactored the checkout and order workflows into simpler code.
  • Optimised the front-end assets.

The result

Pages load noticeably faster, and the cleaner checkout code brought fewer production incidents and support escalations.
